  • Nature Inspires the Next Generation of Renewable Energy Tech

    Solar trees inspired by the Fibonacci spiral, wind turbines that learn from whales, or solar panels based on butterflies are some examples.

Photovoltaic panels have an infinite number of applications. From solar roofs to photovoltaic glass, there are more and more surfaces from which to generate solar energy. One such application is solar trees, part of a wave of technological breakthroughs based on nature.

The "leaves" in some of these photovoltaic trees are distributed following a Fibonacci spiral, a recurring pattern in nature. These nature-inspired solutions, commonly known as biomimicry, can also be found in some wind turbines or solar thermal power plants.

What are solar trees?

This technology has been on the market for several years and is used in installations –usually urban– that combine sustainability with a functional and aesthetic dimension. Solar trees usually have several photovoltaic panels installed as "leaves" with a distribution that optimizes the absorption of solar radiation. The most common solar tree designs are:

  • A main trunk with several branches distributed regularly. It is one of the most basic and least efficient designs.
  • Distribution based on the Fibonacci spiral. This is the most common design, based on attaching "branches" of varying lengths to the main trunk. Although it is more efficient in electricity generation, it is also a higher cost structure.
  • Hemispherical. It forms a dome of leaves that receive solar radiation throughout the day.
  • Spiral phyllotaxy. "Phyllotaxy" describes the growth of branches and leaves in botany. In this case, a kind of umbrella is formed with panels at different heights and orientations installed on branches from the main trunk.
  • Ross Lovegrove. A bouquet of stems with a circular solar panel at each end.
  • Basic solar tree. A design based on a trunk with branches at the upper end at the same angle, like a flat sunflower.   
  • Three-dimensional geometric design. It uses a trunk based on three axes, each with its panels.
  • Supertrees. These 50-meter-high trees combine a vertical garden with two hundred species of plants, a water collector, a solar farm, a lighting system, and an environmental thermal regulation device. This design is one of the most spectacular and can be found in the Gardens by The Bay park in Singapore.

Among the latest solar tree projects is the initiative of the University of Connecticut. The final design has become an object that combines aesthetic qualities -in terms of urban furniture- the generation of renewable energy and sustainable materials such as aluminum.

According to its promoters, the starting point of this project was the creation of an artificial tree to test the optimal position and shape of leaves to maximize energy generation and better understand photosynthesis processes.

The solar tree at this U.S. university has brought together professors and students from different disciplines, such as electrical engineering and urban planning studies. The result is a design based on recyclable materials. It integrates several benches next to the main structure so that users can sit in the shade and, incidentally, charge their cell phones. And all of this is solar-powered.

The world's largest solar tree

However, there are also solar trees that, in addition to the symbolic, artistic, or social dimension, seek to maximize renewable energy production. This is the case of the solar tree of the CSIR-CMERI technology institute in India. With a basic solar tree design, it is the largest device of its kind. Inaugurated in 2022, it has a total area of more than 300 square meters, generating up to 200 kWh daily.

Other examples of biomimicry applied to renewable energy

Along with photovoltaics, other renewable energies have benefited from the biomimetic approach. Whether inspired by organic shapes to improve the aerodynamics of a turbine or to optimize the layout of a solar thermal plant, there are several examples of biomimetics in this sector:

  • The Fibonacci spiral. Present in numerous patterns of organisms and plants, such as sunflowers, this spiral has been used to improve the distribution of mirrors that concentrate solar radiation in solar thermal plants,
  • The flippers of the humpback whale. The irregular edges of the flippers of these cetaceans allow them to optimize their swimming motion and have also been the key to developing wind turbine blades with better aerodynamic qualities.
  • The patterns of butterfly wings. Researchers have improved the cell performance of a new generation of photovoltaic panels by replicating the structure of butterfly wings that maximize absorbed solar radiation.
